Opening Day in the minor leagues!
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Minor League Ball Gameday discussion thread for Thursday, April 5th, 2018. Here are some items worthy of consideration on this fine afternoon.
****Minor League Baseball begins today. You can find the complete schedule of minor league games here. We’ll be hitting the minor league prospect highlights tomorrow and each day during the regular season and will have some in-person game reports as well. I’m especially looking forward to Wayne Cavadi’s observations of the Hagerstown vs. Rome game in South Atlantic League action.
****In prospect news, Boston Red Sox lefty Jay Groome will begin the season in the disabled list at Low-A Greenville with a strained flexor. I don’t regard this as good news given that he missed part of 2017 with a sore forearm.
****Other top prospects on the shelf as the season opens include Detroit Tigers right-hander Franklin Perez (lat strain), Atlanta Braves lefty Luiz Gohara (ankle injury), Cleveland Indians right-hander Triston McKenzie (forearm strain), Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez (strained pectoral), White Sox outfielder Luis Robert (thumb injury), and Seattle Mariners outfielder Kyle Lewis (more knee problems). Rays right-hander Brent Honeywell and Athletics lefty A.J. Puk are out for the season with Tommy John surgery as you know doubt recall.
****Shohei Ohtani hit his second home run for the Los Angeles Angels yesterday and looked very happy doing it.
****In other major league rookie action yesterday, Mariners first baseman Daniel Vogelbach went 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
****While Miami Marlins pre-season hype was focused on outfielder Lewis Brinson, he’s been out-played in the early going by third baseman Brian Anderson, hitting .320/.469/.480 with six walks in his first six games while playing error-less ball at third base.
****At Fangraphs today, Rian Watt has a fascinating article about how Major League Baseball transactions are actually processed by the teams and the league office.
